Agriculture, Sustainable Livelihood & Food Security

Khaire Peace Humanitarian Fund (KPHF) implements Sustainable Livelihoods and Food Security interventions aimed at addressing chronic poverty, recurrent food insecurity, and livelihood erosion among vulnerable populations in South and Central Somalia. These regions are highly exposed to climatic shocks such as prolonged droughts, flash floods along the Shabelle and Juba rivers, insecurity, market volatility, and large-scale displacement, all of which negatively affect household food availability, access, and utilization.

KPHF supports agriculture-based livelihoods by providing drought-tolerant seeds, farming tools, and training on improved agronomic practices, including soil conservation, water-efficient irrigation, crop diversification, and post-harvest management. In riverine areas such as Afgoye and parts of Bay region, the organization supports flood-resilient farming techniques and rehabilitates small-scale irrigation canals and embankments to protect crops and assets. These interventions are complemented by farmer field schools and extension services to strengthen knowledge transfer and productivity.

For pastoral and agro-pastoral communities, KPHF strengthens livestock-based livelihoods through animal health campaigns, vaccination support, fodder production, and improved access to livestock markets. Cash-for-work and asset creation activities are implemented to rehabilitate productive community infrastructure while providing short-term income support. Cash-based transfers, both conditional and unconditional, are used to stabilize household food consumption and stimulate local markets.

KPHF integrates nutrition-sensitive approaches by promoting household dietary diversity, kitchen gardening, and food preparation awareness. Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and producer cooperatives are established to enhance financial inclusion, savings culture, and access to capital. Through these integrated and context-responsive interventions, KPHF aims to strengthen self-reliance, reduce dependency on aid, and build long-term resilience among Somali households.
